The inspiration for Illusions comes from none other than the master of graphic illusions, M. C. Escher. I even did my own rendition of his Moonscape onto the walls of one of my bathrooms at a previous residence.
He probably thought of himself as more of a mathematician than an artist, so it's obvious why his work would appeal to both my brain sides. At first I thought of his multi-directional staircases, thinking that it would be fun to try and put one together using my own images of stairs. Although I do have several shots of stairs, none seem to be at the right angle, and hardly had any people on them.
But the concept started forming: to confuse realities. It was not enough to try and incorporate incongruous images together in the same composition; that's even been done many times before. I also did not want to meld images so well that the viewer wouldn't even be aware that something was amiss. No, it had to be apparent.
The first ones seem to consist of images whose scales are at odds, but my aim was not to hide that fact. For the full effect I wanted to achieve, the opposing images would need to jump right out into plain sight, smacking the viewer upside their confused little heads.
This series is still in its infant stage, but already I can see a myriad of directional possibilities. Stay tuned.
